Moulding Compounds

PMMA moulding compounds are easily processed using traditional thermoplastic processing equipment. The two primary methods of processing this material are injection moulding and extrusion.

Injection moulding is the process of injecting a molten plastic into a mould under pressure. The moulding compounds are fed into an injection unit typically consisting of a screw and a heated barrel. The screw rotates, melts and conveys the melted polymer. Then the screw moves forward pushing the melted plastic into the mould. The plastic fills the mould and cools, leaving a formed part in the shape of the mould. This process is typically used in the manufacture of automobile parts, electronic pieces, and medical devices components.

Extrusion is the second widely used processing technology for PMMA moulding compounds. In this process, the moulding compound pellets are melted and conveyed in a heated barrel containing one or two rotating screws. The melted plastic is pushed through a die or head with the desired shape. Upon exiting the die; the material cools to its final cross-sectional shape. This process is typically used in the manufacture of sheets, films, pipes, tubes, rods and profiles for a variety of applications.
